France - Mayotte

Present in Mayotte since January 2025, following the ravages of cyclone Chido, Super-Novae intervenes in support of local health structures, in order to support the emergency response. Super-Novae intends, in the near future, to deploy economic recovery interventions for the island's populations.

background

A French territory located in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and the African continent, Mayotte has a complex social and humanitarian situation. An overseas department since 2011, the island has been facing strong tensions linked to economic precariousness, increasing migratory pressure, and the lack of public services. More than half of the population lives below the poverty line, and a large number of people, especially from neighbouring Comoros, live in informal settlements without secure access to water, electricity or healthcare. Social inequalities, urban violence and difficulties in accessing fundamental rights reinforce a climate of instability. This fragility was cruelly highlighted by the passage of cyclone Chido in December 2024, which caused significant damage to infrastructure, agricultural land and homes by devastating many precarious neighborhoods, and permanently disrupted the supply of drinking water and electricity. In this context, Super-Novae intervenes to support local resilience dynamics and promote access to essential services.

What do we do

Faced with the emergency, an immediate medical response: Launched in January, our project in Mayotte made it possible to rapidly deploy an emergency medical response following cyclone Chidoma. Thanks to the joint mobilization of the teams of Secouristes Sans Frontières (SSF), SOS MÉDECINS FRANCE and Super-novae.org, and with the indispensable support of the Fondation de France, the City of Dijon and Dijon Métropole, a field hospital has been set up to help the most affected populations. Medical consultations began in the first weeks, supported by the sending of equipment, medication and the coordination of qualified health personnel. This system made it possible to ensure rapid access to care, in extremely degraded conditions. New partnerships were also concluded with the Regions of France and, in April 2025, with the GBH group in order to strengthen our action in the field. Together, we have taken up the challenge of responding to the emergency, while laying the foundations for sustainable support for the population.

What's next

Faced with structural vulnerabilities aggravated by the passage of Cyclone Chido, Super-Novae wishes to go beyond emergency humanitarian action to contribute to the economic recovery of Mayotte. We want to support the professional and entrepreneurial integration of young people, by strengthening their skills and by supporting local initiatives that create value. At the same time, we aim to participate in the revival of the agricultural sector, an essential pillar of food security and economic resilience on the island. This involves the rehabilitation of damaged agricultural land, as well as the provision of appropriate equipment and inputs. By drawing on local dynamics and existing know-how, Super-Novae intends to contribute to an inclusive and sustainable economic recovery, at the service of the most affected communities.
